Parcul Natural Cozia is a protected natural area in Romania known for its diverse mountainous landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural landmarks, offering excellent opportunities for hiking, wildlife observation, and exploring historical sites.
Parcul Natural Cozia is located in the Southern Carpathians of Romania, primarily within Vâlcea County. Established in 2000, the park covers a portion of the Cozia Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathians, featuring rugged limestone formations, steep cliffs, deep gorges, and dense forests. The park’s geography includes the Olt River valley, which provides a dramatic contrast between mountainous terrain and riverine environments. Ecologically, Cozia supports mixed forests dominated by beech, fir, and spruce, alongside rare flora and fauna, including brown bears, wolves, lynxes, and various bird species that enrich the region’s biodiversity. The park is also home to several endemic and protected plant species. Visitors are drawn by numerous well-marked trails that allow exploration from valley floors to mountain peaks, such as Cozia Peak at approximately 1668 meters altitude. Outdoor recreation includes hiking, climbing, mountain biking, fishing in mountain streams, and birdwatching. Historical and cultural attractions add to the appeal, notably the 14th-century Cozia Monastery, a significant religious and architectural monument founded by Mircea the Elder, nearby the park’s core area. Scenic spots such as the Olt Gorge, with dramatic rock formations and clear river waters, are highlights. Parcul Natural Cozia offers an accessible natural retreat combining nature, history, and outdoor adventure, making it popular with local and international visitors seeking Romanian natural heritage.
